International cricket tournament in Guernsey gets sponsorship from Wave Telecom
Wave Telecom has agreed to be the official partner for the ICC European Division 2 Championships,2008, to be held in Guernsey from 18th to 23rd August. Guernsey will compete against Germany, Gibraltar, Croatia, France and Jersey with all but the latter (Jersey are already in WCL Division 4) having the chance to qualify for one of the ICC World Cricket League Divisions 5 – 7, and an opportunity to qualify for a play-off challenge for Europe’s Division 1. The highlight of the week for all Channel Islanders will be the final fixture of the round-robin tournament which has the potential to be a thrilling finale - Guernsey v Jersey at the KGV on Saturday 23rd August. This promises to be the biggest and highest-profile inter-insular fixture yet, and is the first time that the two islands will meet at senior level in an ICC senior event. Both sides will no doubt be hoping that earlier results in the tournament will mean that victory could secure the title. A huge crowd from both islands is expected. Entry to the ground is free. Kevin Graham, Wave Telecom’s Head of Sales, is delighted to be involved. “This promises to be one of the most significant sporting events ever held in the Channel Islands and we are all really excited about the tournament. Cricket in Guernsey is really going places so this is an exciting time for Wave to partner this prestigious ICC event hosted by the Guernsey Cricket Board. The game against Jersey should be a fantastic day for players, officials and spectators alike. Hopefully we’ll all have reason to celebrate after that!” Richard Holdsworth, ICC Regional Development Manager – Europe welcomes Wave Telecom’s support. “ICC Europe and the Guernsey Cricket Board are extremely grateful to Wave Telecom for their generous support in what will be an outstanding event”. “Guernsey has recently been promoted to ICC Associate Member status, and local support like this for the game will only enhance the development of the game on the Island”. This support will not only benefit the game locally but also support the other five European participating nations and they are truly grateful for this”.
